September 12th is here!

It's time to act. Make three phone calls to change the course of history.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?

(1) Can I make a difference?

Yes, Congress is teetering on the edge of taking action on the war. While you won't get to speak directly to your representatives, elected officials and their staff use opinions registered in phone calls, letters, and e-mails as a way to gauge sentiment in their districts on key issues. But don't just act alone. Click here to forward this information to friends and neighbors. The key is to flood the switchboards of our congressional leaders and implore them to act.

(2) What do I do?

On September 12, at any time between 9am and 4:30pm EST, simply call your Congressional representative and your two U.S. senators.

(3) How do I find the phone numbers?

You can call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be directed to your representatives OR go to www.congress.org and enter in your zip code in the box at the top of the page. You may be directed to enter your full address if your zip code cuts across two congressional districts. You will be directed to a page that has links to the contact information for your representative and two senators.

(4) What do I say when I call?

Most of all, speak from your heart. If you're heart broken at seeing the weeping families of young, brave soldiers who've been killed or maimed in Iraq, then express this. If you're terrified at the prospect of the re-energized Al Qaeda that has resulted from the distraction of Iraq, then say so. If you're upset at the trillions of dollars in taxes that you and your children will have to pay to fund this misguided war, then show your outrage. You might want to begin the call with something along the lines of, "I implore you to put aside partisanship and find a way out of Iraq immediately. I want Congress to set a date certain for the end of the war, and to work with commanders in the field on a sensible pull-out strategy. I don't want to wait for the next election cycle for this to happen. Not one more day should pass before we resolve to end this terrible mistake."

September 12, 2001 could have been the beginning of a world of new possibilities. Reeling from the tragedy of September 11, citizens of the U.S. and the world were ready to rally behind President Bush, and the opportunity might never have been better in our lifetimes for a departure from the American oil dependence that warps the Middle East's economic and social structures, or for a renewed call for national service, or even for a dedicated effort to hold allies like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan responsible for their actions -- implicit and explicit -- in harboring and nurturing terrorists. Instead, on September 12, 2001, George Bush, Dick Cheney, and Don Rumsfeld began plotting an invasion against Iraq, leading us down a fateful and distrastrous path toward a seemingly endless and pointless war. On the 6th anniversary of September 12, 2001, make three phone calls to help us once again foster a world of new possibilites and opportunities. The timing could not be better, as Congress is scheduled to debate the future course of the war throughout September.

Click here to fill-out our pledge form, which commits you to making these three critical phone calls on September 12. Your name will be added to our list of pledges that appears on this web site. Please pledge today. The more people who sign on, the more that this effort can grow into a movement that changes the course of events in Iraq.

FAQs

(1) Do you believe that the Iraq War has distracted us from the real war on terror, and has diminished American influence and standing in world affairs?

(2) Do you believe that the death of even one more American soldier in this unnecessary war is too many?

(3) Do you believe that the $177 million we spend each day on fighting a misguided, poorly planned war is a national travesty?

(4) Do you believe that the Iraq War has made us less safe by straining our military to the breaking point, pulling our focus from Afghanistan where Al Qaeda has rebuilt its forces, and fostering the recruitment of hundreds if not thousands of martyrs aligned against the U.S.?

(5) Do you believe that Congress has denied the overwhelming will of the American people to end the war?

If you agree, then do something about it. Call your U.S. Congressman and your two U.S. Senators on September 12, and tell them that you will not accept further delay in formulating an exit strategy for Iraq.

Act on Iraq supports a reasonable withdrawal strategy that protects our troops and diminishes the possibilities for an all-out civil war in Iraq. Full withdrawal will not happen tomorrow, but we must start the process today by declaring a date certain for the end of the war and initiating a phased withdrawal. We believe it is reasonable to begin troop reductions within 90 days, and to have American troops completely withdrawn from Iraq by March 31, 2008. If you believe in a more aggressive timetable, please express that to your congressional representatives.

You can make a difference in bringing to an end a tragic chapter in American history! Join our movement and tell Republicans and Democrats, alike, that it's time to rise above partisanship and plot an end to the war.
